A phase field approach in the numerical study of the elastic bending energy for vesicle membranes q

چکیده
In this paper, we compute the equilibrium configurations of a vesicle membrane under elastic bending energy, with prescribed volume and surface area. A variational phase field method is developed for such a problem. Discrete finite difference approximations and numerical simulations are carried out in the axial symmetrical cases. Different energetic bifurcation phenomena are discussed. 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Modelling and Simulations of Multi-component Lipid Membranes and Open Membranes via Diffusive Interface Approaches∗
In this paper, phase field models are developed for multi-component vesicle membranes with different lipid compositions and membranes with free boundary. These models are used to simulate the deformation of membranes under the elastic bending energy and the line tension energy with prescribed volume and surface area constraints. By comparing our numerical simulations with recent experiments, it...
متن کاملRetrieving Topological Information for Phase Field Models
The phase field approach has become a popular tool in modeling interface motion, microstructure evolution, and more recently the shape transformation of vesicle membranes under elastic bending energy. While it is advantageous to employ phase field models in numerical simulations to automatically handle topological changes to the microstructures or the configurations of vesicle membranes, detect...
متن کاملConvergence of Numerical Approximations to a Phase Field Bending Elasticity Model of Membrane Deformations
We study numerical approximations of a recently proposed phase field model for the vesicle membrane deformations governed by the variation of the elastic bending energy. Both the spatial discretization for the equilibrium problem with given volume and surface area constraints and the time discretization of a dynamic problem via gradient flow are considered. Convergence results of the numerical ...
متن کاملPhase-field modeling and simulations of multicomponent cell membranes
In this talk, we report some of recent works with current and former colleagues at Penn State (S. Das, M. Li, C. Liu, R. Ryham, X. Wang and J. Zhang) on the phase field modeling and simulations of the vesicle membrane deformation under elastic bending energy and the interaction with background fluid flows and other external fields. We discuss the relations between the phase field model and the ...
متن کاملModeling the Spontaneous Curvature Effects in Static Cell Membrane Deformations by a Phase Field Formulation
In this paper, we study the effects of the spontaneous curvature on the static deformation of a vesicle membrane under the elastic bending energy, with prescribed bulk volume and surface area. Generalizing the phase field models developed in our previous works, we deduce a new energy formula involving the spontaneous curvature effects. Several axis-symmetric configurations are obtained through ...
